Project is part of ‘weServeEats’ effort to feed kids in Liberia

WHEELING, W.Va. – There was plenty of food at the Ziegenfelder Company’s annual Christmas breakfast, but most of it was not served during the Dec. 5 event at Wheeling Island Race Track.

Ziegenfelder employees participated in a charity function with weServeEats, an organization dedicated to feeding hungry and overlooked children through nutrient-packed, cost-efficient food.

The Ziegenfelder team packed 29,226 meals that will be distributed to hungry kids in Liberia. Breanna Humphries, the founder of weServeEats, is a process specialist who has been part of the Ziegenfelder team for a year.

“We wanted to do something special to help those less fortunate,” said Lisa Allen, President and CEO of Ziegenfelder Company. “Our holiday breakfast and company meeting provided us an opportunity to have our team participate in such an important endeavor. The fact that Breanna is the founder of weServeEats makes this an even more significant project.”

For 155 years, the Ziegenfelder name has been synonymous with wholesome frozen treats such as its Budget Saver Twin Pops. The company, headquartered in Wheeling, and with plants in Denver, Colorado, and Chino, California, is the largest producer of frozen twin pops in the United States.

Earlier this year, 150 volunteers in Zanesville, Ohio, helped pack 64,464 meals that were shipped to Monrovia, Liberia in West Africa. In 2012, approximately 200 volunteers at a church in Rolling Plains, Ohio, packed 71,280 meals in less than 2 hours. That project sent 9,000 meals to hungry kids in the local area and the remainder went to Liberia.
